49ers upset after fans cheered when QB C.J. Beathard was injured

Fans certainly were excited to see Jimmy Garoppolo make his debut with the 49ers, but it came at a cost to starting quarterback C.J. Beathard.

“Then when Jimmy goes out there, you cheer. Give him a pep talk, let him know you’re all behind him. But let him know you’re behind our (starting) quarterback, too, C.J.”

Beathard threw for 201 yards before Seahawks’ Michael Bennett delivered the knockout blow resulting in a knee injury for the 49ers’ starting quarterback, which allowed Garoppolo to have his debut. Garoppolo scored his first touchdown for the 49ers after completing both of his passes.

“I don’t think it was malicious by our fans, that they were cheering he was injured,” left tackle Joe Staley said. “They were excited. But at the same time, you can’t do that.”

They looked too good in too many games to be 0-4, and to be looking up at every team in the division a month into the season. The players, including Philip Rivers, and coach Anthony Lynn, kept insisting then that things weren’t as bad as they looked, that they were better than the year before when they were losing games in much the same fashion (eight losses by seven points or fewer in 2016), that this wasn’t going to continue.

Now, the Chargers hotter than any team there, and, as a bonus, less dysfunctional (a more fitting description for the Broncos and Raiders, who both fired coordinators this week).

Thompson, who was originally estimated to miss three to four weeks with the injury, will end up missing nearly six weeks. He took issue with that timeline Monday.

“Who said there was a real timetable? [The team] told you guys three to four weeks. That was never the case,” Thompson said. “The first week I was on crutches for a week, so there was no chance. I don’t know who told you three to four weeks. I feel bad. I’m sorry. You all should have just asked me or [direct messaged] me. I would have told y’all the truth.mariners_750

Tracy Stallard, who gave up Roger Maris’ 61st homer, dies at 80

The first investigation by West Point concluded that there was a consensual sexual relationship between the two cadets, despite Bradshaw, who has since invoked a right to remain silent, reportedly denying having any sexual contact, according to The Daily Beast.

Philadelphia Eagles tight end Zach Ertz is doubtful for Sunday’s showdown against the Los Angeles Rams due to a concussion he suffered last weekend, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Ertz exited last Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Seattle Seahawks with a head injury.

He remained on the ground and appeared dazed following a third-quarter hit over the middle by safety Bradley McDougald. Ertz walked off under his own power but was taken to the trainers tent to be tested for a concussion before heading to the locker room. He did not return to the game.

Although he was OK’d to practice Thursday, he has yet to clear the concussion protocol, according to the Eagles.

NFL Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent said Wednesday the NFL would consider implementing a targeting rule in the wake of a weekend marred by several helmet-to-helmet hits.

Steelers safety Mike Mitchell already went off on commissioner Roger Goodell and the NFL about their punishments for hits after games, so one can only imagine players’ reactions if the NFL adds even stricter punishment during games.

“I would just hate to see rule come into the pros because it makes me not want to watch the college game because I know at any second, a guy could be kicked out for a hit and I don’t know how it is, but they possibly be suspended for half of the game or something like that,” Wagner said. “Nobody wants to see that.”

Wagner was fined once this season for his hit on Texans running back Lamar Miller, but it was for a horse-collar tackle and not a helmet-to-helmet hit. He does have trouble with the position defensive players are put in with the rules already in place.

Manning went on to win two Super Bowls against the Patriots and if he isn’t a sure-fire Hall of Famer he is right on the cusp.

Manning has put his heart and soul into the team and losing the job as the starting QB of the Giants has been hard on him. Now, he has to possibly consider playing for someone else, because even though he is 36-years-old, he still appears to have games left in him.

For a team that has benched one cornerback for another already this season, his return from injured reserve was a welcome one and he’s made an impact. I said he’s not going to be a savior that is going to change the Chiefs’ fortunes all at once, but he’s going to help.

Now the Mavs (7-20) look to be the first team to face the Spurs with Leonard, who has yet to play this season because of an injury that the team has only labeled as left quadriceps tendinopathy.

Through nine games, Ellis has put up 32 tackles (18 solo) which is the seventh most in the league among defensive tackles. Those are good numbers over a full season for most nose tackles. And they are well above anything Ellis has put up in any single season in his career.

Prior to this season, Ellis’s career best season in combined tackles was 22. He’s already 10 tackles over that with nearly a half season still remaining. Should Ellis somehow match his tackle total over the first nine games over the final seven, he will match his tackles totals over his first three seasons combined.

Rob Gronkowski says he got ‘yelled at’ after ‘horse’ TD celebration with Brandin Cooks

Riding the tight end like he’s a small horse is frowned upon in this establishment.

“I guess those were the biscuits,” Gronkowski said Sunday. “I guess he wasn’t making any more, so he made up for it. But I still want those biscuits.”

However, the second-year passer’s inability to stay healthy or take the reins in one of the league’s saddest quarterback races (non-Browns division) is not a good sign.

He’ll miss Sunday’s game thanks to an ankle sprain, but his latest turn at the top of the Denver depth chart wasn’t especially encouraging. In 18 dropbacks against the Raiders, he gained just 38 net yards (41 passing, 20 rushing, -23 on sacks) and tossed an interception for a 38.4 passer rating. 14 straight incompletions would have netted him a 39.4.

For the seniors, the New Mexico Bowl is one last opportunity to go out a winner.

“Ryan, (running back) Tony (Pittman), they’re my best friends,” Litton said following the loss. “When I first came in, I was the fourth-string. I was a freshman who people really didn’t expect much from. I stuck with them. I came in and studied film with these guys and lifted with them. They believed in me.

Carolina outshot the Kings 34-21, yet despite putting on the pressure could not find the net for the opening two periods.

The Kings struggled early, too, before Toffoli and Kopitar teamed up twice in less than three minutes in the second.

But the Kings’ offense stalled at that point and the Hurricanes mounted a comeback.

NFL reviewing Sean Payton’s conduct near end of Saints-Falcons game, report says

Sean Payton’s unsportsmanlike conduct penalty near the end of Thursday night’s Saints-Falcons game is being reviewed by the NFL, ESPN reported Friday.

The NFL could fine Payton for his action Thursday night.

Cousins said he persuaded coach Alvin Gentry to delay subbing him back into the game in the fourth quarter because he didn’t want to disrupt New Orleans’ surge into the lead.

“He wanted me to get AD a break, but at that moment we were kind of going on a run, so I said, `Coach, let `em roll,” Cousins recalled. “I just didn’t want to be the guy to break what we had going on.”

Ginn: “It’s the league, man. It just makes me want to get better and better and do more and more, because I’m at the age (32) where a guy can give up on you kind of quick because of your age. When they’ve seen you do whatever for how many years, it’s kind of like repetitive and you ain’t changing it, they’re going to figure out if they need to go somewhere else.

“It’s a hard thing to really swallow when you see a Hall of Famer or a great like that.”

In early November, Jones hired famed attorney David Boies as a threat to sue the league if the compensation committee approved Goodell’s extension, an extension that all owners, including Jones, authorized in May. No suit was ever brought. However, Jones successfully delayed Goodell’s extension; many owners expected that it would be approved months ago.royals_030

Giants fire coach Ben McAdoo, GM Jerry Reese

Ben McAdoo couldn’t manage to save his job — or that of his boss.

With McAdoo’s job on the line, Smith went 21 of 34 for 212 yards and a touchdown but turned the ball over twice on fumbles in a less than impressive performance.

According to NFL Network, Manning is expected to resume his starting role under center Sunday against the Cowboys.

McAdoo, 40, was named the Giants’ head coach in January 2016 after spending the previous two years serving as the team’s offensive coordinator. He led the team to an 11-5 record and a playoff berth last season.

Prior to his stint in New York, McAdoo held various coaching positions with the Packers (2006-13), 49ers (2005) and Saints (2004).

Reese, 54, was promoted to the GM position in January 2007 after working in the Giants’ front office since 1994.

“All I know is I was running a corner route, and when that DB came in and I got off on him, I knew I was gone,” Miller said. “I felt my leg pop. I wasn’t sure it was that bad. I knew I had an injury, but in my mind it was just hold onto the ball as long as you can.”

The injury happened in the third quarter of the game when Miller made an incredible one-handed catch in the end zone. The play was initially ruled a touchdown, but a replay review overturned the call as he was carted off the field with his leg in an aircast.

Said another club official to ESPN: “I think the perspective of the commissioner’s office has been, ‘Hey, we set up this system to limit your [financial] exposure, so you need to play by the rules.'”panthers_042

Cousins has already proven to Washington that he’s a quality starting quarterback.

The New Orleans Saints looked toast down 15 late in the fourth quarter, but Drew Brees orchestrated two touchdown drives in the final minutes to lead the team back against Washington and get a 34-31 win in overtime.

There’s not much more the team can learn about him over the next few games that it wouldn’t already know.

New England is 24-3 SU in its last 27 games against the Bills per the OddsShark NFL Database. Buffalo has gone 1-5 SU and ATS in its last six games against division rivals. The Patriots have won seven straight games and have covered the spread in each of their last five.

Philadelphia visits Seattle for Sunday Night Football this week. The Eagles have run away with the NFC East with a 10-1 SU and 9-2 ATS record so far this season. Seattle is 8-0 SU and ATS in its last eight games played on Week 13.

Rounding out this week’s primetime games are Washington at Dallas (-1) on Thursday night and Pittsburgh (-6) at Cincinnati on Monday night. Dallas is 7-2 SU in its last eight games against Washington, and Pittsburgh is 5-0 SU in its last five games against Cincinnati.orioles_020

The Redskins missed an opportunity to leapfrog the Cowboys in the NFC East.

The Bills suddenly are reeling after consecutive lopsided losses.

A rested Ravens defense will test Green Bay’s newfound confidence in Brett Hundley.

Kelce: Chiefs have to man up: The Chiefs have now lost four of five and look a shadow of the team that crushed the Patriots on opening night. “We have to man up,” tight end Travis Kelce said in his assessment of the game. “Nobody is pointing fingers, but guys have to get called out and be more accountable, and that starts with myself.” Kansas City’s lead in the AFC West is just two games, and fingers will be pointed if that slips away.

Zach talks to Jeff Van Gundy about the Wolves defense, the Thunder’s struggles, the Clippers collapse, and strange starts across the Western Conference.
Westbrook and Paul George have tried it a couple of times this season. It hasn’t worked yet.

After being traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder this offseason, George spent time watching tape of Durant and Westbrook playing together, trying to get a feel for where Westbrook could set him up best, or how he should move without the ball.

Certainly, the Lakers’ defense looked as if it were already on break. The Lakers watched Antonio Blakeney explode for 15 points in eight minutes and throw down a vicious one-handed dunk on Julius Randle. Denzel Valentine (17 points) also made his first four shots, including three 3-pointers.

Kyle Kuzma kept the Lakers within reach by scoring 18 of his 22 points in the first half. But a cast of Lakers came to life after halftime.steelers_031

How Lonzo Ball helped De’Aaron Fox score on the sneaker market

Sacramento Kings rookie point guard De’Aaron Fox has a budding rivalry with fellow rookie Lonzo Ball, famously ending Ball’s college career with a win in the NCAA tournament, then saying he wanted to win that game to “shut LaVar Ball up.”

After placing four players on injured reserve Tuesday, the Redskins (4-6) will not even attempt a full practice before the game.

Earlier in the quarter, the Titans squandered a chance to start putting the game away when rookie wide receiver Corey Davis fumbled out of bounds while trying to stick the football over the goal line. The ensuing touchback “allowed (Cincinnati) to stick around,” Woodyard said.

To its credit, Tennessee’s offense rebounded and stuck it to Cincinnati on what proved the game-winning 12-play, 73-yard drive following Green’s touchdown. Mariota accounted for 63 of those yards (passing and rushing combined).

Shaquill Griffin, CB, Seattle Seahawks: Griffin exited the game after being shaken up on the first defensive series of the game while making a tackle. He was replaced by the recently signed Byron Maxwell. Griffin was taken back to the locker room to be evaluated for a concussion, and declared doubtful to return.

Pittsburgh defensive end Stephon Tuitt sacks Mariota on third down, forcing a Titans punt.

The Steelers go three-and-out on back-to-back possessions after scoring on their first two drives. The Titans get the ball back on their 29 with just under 10 minutes to play in the half.

Tennessee comes away with no points on the possession. The Titans’ drive stalls following the fourth-down conversion. Kicker Ryan Succop comes on and attempts a 48-yard field goal but his kick is blocked. The Steelers will take over on their 30, leading 10-7.

Mariota completes a third-down pass to Delanie Walker, who comes up just short of the marker. The Titans decide to go for it and convert on the play as Mariota falls forward for a yard.

Did President Obama go batcrap?

“I’m sure cheeseburgers will be on the menu,” said Thompson. “And these guys are never short on opinions. Jim Cornette is the greatest talker in the history of the business. People say that Bobby Heenan had the sharpest wit, and I don’t know that you can argue that, but when it comes to rants, I don’t know that anybody can hold a candle to Jim Cornette. Anyone who was disappointed that I wasn’t going to be there is going to get more than their money’s worth when Jim Cornette is there.”

Whitlock on how players and the NFL fell for Trump’s bait: “I include ownership, coaches, executives, Roger Goodell. He baited us, and they fell for it unbelievably. Oh my God, he says we shouldn’t kneel, so let’s everybody kneel together. Let’s show Donald Trump! … Everybody that Trump says something bad about should go absolutely batcrap then.

Robby Anderson, New York Jets, ankle, 1 p.m. ET: Anderson’s presence on the injury report was worthy of attention, but it was for only a day. After being limited Wednesday, Anderson was a full participant both Thursday and Friday, and his removal from the pregame injury report indicates he will be ready to play against the Falcons.

The scheme earned one victory, the organization’s first in NASCAR, in the MENCS event at North Carolina Motor Speedway (Rockingham) on Oct. 22, 1989. The scheme, originally sponsored by Stroh Light, ran in the MENCS during the 1988 and 1989 seasons. During that time period, the Roush Fenway Ford earned one win, 17 top-fives, 28 top-10s and led 602 laps in 58 total starts.

Is Fromm who Gardner told us he was? Because he just threw a horribly thrown ball to start the second half, and Duke Dawson just picked it off. Ugh, weird stuff always happens at the World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party.

How are TCU quarterback Kenny Hill and his Horned Frogs going to turn it around … never mind, KaVontae Turpin just ran past everyone for a 94-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff of the second half.
